18.6 km from Big C flyover and look for the signs. Ye gods! We almost needed passports and an hour’s time zone change. Actually hares Kwazi and Square Rooter earned high praise from Dogshit, the latecomer, for picking a beautiful site but ‘leaving the most beautiful trails for me’. It was far out and it was beautiful, but that’s enough about Dogshit’s midriff.
Red Songtau left Next Place perhaps a millisecond after 4:30 with old mother Frozen Dick kvetching about punctuality. Bone Hur was also on time, waiting at No 1 Bar which isn’t the pick up point anymore. Phone calls, swearing and U turns later and Boney was onboard ready to rock. Now ten minutes late, Frozen was apopleptic but no-one could hear him as he was riding shotgun in the front!
Kwazi’s hare brief was brief. On Mother paper and away went the pack, down the track after 50 yards having been told to follow the road! Humperdick, splendidly attired (for golf), entertained us with impressions of certain hashers running. Alice made a few correct decisions and the first three circles were successfully guessed. “Aha, I have finally understood Kwazi’s mind and broken the code of his thought processes.” From circle check 4 till the end, the opposite was true of course, and your ‘umble scribe finished down amongst the dead men, or just behind HRA, alongside Bone Hur and infront of Skidmarks, which is much the same thing.
His Royal, fresh from painting the new CNX Muay Thai Boxing Ring a comely shade of slime, ran without his gaters, laying forgotten and abandoned somewhere. Much like plates and cutlery Poo was definitely 100% going to bring.
The trail was mostly enclosed jungle tracks, often wet, muddy and sandy, usually riven with trailbike tracks which gave one the feeling that certain hares had mechanical assistance. It was quiet too, naturally and unnaturally, or at least until Skidmarks was sure he had an advantage!
The tricky circle check behind the fishfarms really slowed the pack until On On! was called in the aforesaid premises and HRA helpfully marked the piano wire garrote line with two pieces of paper. Dogshit decided to impale his head on rotan spikes shortly afterwards and so earned the non existent Hash Crash award.
Strange to relate, Poo was just jogging along until the whiff of fish seemed to stimulate him greatly. We deserve an explanation.
The circle was civilised and refined, as befits a 60th birthday celebration for the estimable Kwazi, King for the Day. Birthday boy was on form but struggled to name US presidents in any cogent order from his early youth. Dogshit suggested Lincoln! On Ons at a cowboy themed Steak House was yee haw and ride em cowboy, as soon as we saw the waitresses.

A good turn out appeared in the rain for Alice’s run. He’d spent all week getting lost, avoiding mischief and scouting with Throbbing Ninja and then set the trail with Screwed Up. There are some great trails around and they did a great job of finding an interesting route. Unfortunately this particular hasher did a great job of f**king it all up!

At the first circle check I found some paper and set off only to find out sometime later that I was following a run from Chilly Pussy some month or so back. Amazingly the paper was still in good shape and it wasn’t the last time I did an extensive detour. When I retraced my steps and rejoined the pack I was the last to climb up a pointless hill, only to come straight back down again – Kwazi did the sensible thing and just strolled down the trail to wait for the runners to come back down not far from where we went up.  Chuck Wao, believing I was up front, set a pace that even HRA couldn’t follow and as the checks were largely predictable he careered in ahead of the pack.  Meanwhile I spent the rest of the run overtaking.

The hare setting trail

The highlight was the water crossing – thigh deep for me and tit deep for S&M girl! With no obvious detour to avoid it, the plan was surely to force Chuckie to get his feet wet – only given the rain his feet were already wet, so he played the game and trundled through it.

Dog Shit teamed up with multiple hares (S&M Girl, Rachael and belatedly Just Cumming). The rain had turned the run site to slush, and it looked ominously like we were going to get wet. Fortunately the rains stopped and we were about to set off in the dry, even if we were sliding around in the mud.

The first V check had been destroyed by some workers, but we figured out what had gone wrong when we hit a check back. Another cross check had us all fooled as we were convinced we would be heading to the right and into the mountains – instead Doggie had taken us left and kept us on the flat ground through some orchards.

The pace was high and the runners rejoined the wimps as they came out of their short cut with a long finish along the road we drove in on. Chuck Wao was determined and sprinted up the hill at the finish to the oversized ONIN.  It was a nice run, well laid with plenty enough to confuse us.

Another Great Run By Frozen Dick! He advertised well in advance, and the verdict at the end was it was probably the best run he’s set – yet! It was familiar ground from the football pitch south on the canal road, and with several visitors the turn out was quite good.  We set off across the road across the gravel pit and headed up the hill.

Jake set off well, running up the hill while everyone else walked, until the first check that foxed him – we carried on up the hill. Great running trails that weren’t too steep so we were able to keep a good pace so the runners were in their element. Byte My Yahoo got a few checks right on the bounce and was away, until he took an extra loop to get back to the trail after one check.

The descent was just as pleasant with some fast trails and a relentless pace at the front. Finally we got back to the road and then the imagination of the trail was lost with a good km or so back on the tarmac back to the A. Chuck Wao and Jake had a race going on at the front and what was left of the pack spread out. As Frozen Dick said, it was a great run!

Happy Birthday Blue Tit!  Today was a celebration run – celebrating Blue Tit’s birthday, Bone Collector’s birthday and most importantly the fact that Horny Monkey is gone for 8 weeks!  Stepping into his shoes as GM for the day was Belly Dancer.

The run set off with a couple of cute little checks which took us back and forth until we set off up the hill. A long running trail took us gently up the hill and HRA took to the front running up as only he can. The rest of the pack stretched out as it went up and up. We knew we’d be heading back down to the right, what we didn’t know was which ridge we’d cut back down and well placed checks kept us guessing. Sloppy Rod and I thought we’d got it with a hidden trail at one point, only to find we were down the wrong ridge.

Finally when we did head right, a silent running visitor broke away as we ran into short cutting walkers going the wrong way. Somehow Mr Poo got away from everyone and ran in first – it must have been his day as I didn’t see him all trail, and he must have slipped past at that last circle check. Chuck Wao was waiting for us at the finish – some excuse about a police car hitting him from behind.

At the finish the talk was about what a great trail it was. Beforehand we’d challenged that Bone Hur had surely had some part in setting the trail, but given what a good run it was, surely he can’t have been any part of it! He’s lived there how long and still not found as nice a gentle uphill and downhill route for us to take! Nice work virgin hare!

HRA chose a run site he’d only run at before – but I guess he must have missed out on many of Kwazi’s runs that used the same area until we got shot at on the 4th July! Nonetheless we set off on familiar trails with Belly Dancer and I jogging off to the first check – tough luck BD, I was right and didn’t see BD again till the end.

Given the rain the up trail was slippery and kept most of us on our toes with Chuck Wao again slipping away and running through a couple of checks.  I finally caught him up when he was confused by two circle checks that were close together – I guess we missed a bit of the trail, but the rain was falling and we were still on trail.

CW, a guy called FootLong and I escaped from the pack and were doing well till we hit a circle as we rejoined a main trail. Foot Long took the obvious downhill trail to the left, CW was forced to head uphill to the right so I took a less obvious trail that kinda went straight. None of us found trail and we spent too much time hacking around before we realised Foot Long had screwed up and finally found the trail clearly marked going down the hill.

Chuck Wao and Foot Long were off, and I chased as best I could along the slippery down hill trail. It was a good run, and without the weather it could have been a great run! A run so great that Kwazi has set is for us several times already – give or take a corner or so. Mr. Poo was back for the circle and slowly warmed up. It was great to see a few extras show up – Beautiful Box brought a crew and Fish and Tits appeared to wait the run out in the car! Good Work HRA.

At short notice Frozen Dick stepped in to set today’s run after Big Top was hospitalised – best wishes Big Top!  I think most of the hashers were wishing Big Top was still there to set the run, but surely Chuck Wao (co-hare) kept Frozen Dick under control???  I still remember the last FD run I was on where nobody made it back!  Familiar grounds out at the Tiger’s Head in Maejo – surely we would survive!

We set off and I was immediately thwarted by a V check up hill to the check back. The guests / visitors were leading the group up a narrow trail zig zagging up the side of a hill until we could finally hit trail and run. BAM! Into a “Frozen Dick” check – now this isn’t standard and I’m shocked Chuck “International Standards” Wao had let it go, but it was there…  There is a number on the tree and we have to count back 6 pieces of paper to where we could then start searching for a trail within 100m. We must have looked ridiculous as no-one can count that high and we just dispersed in the hope of finding paper!

The paper was good although with each piece saying “Another Great Frozen Dick Run” was clearly a lie! Skid Mark found a trail and everyone stormed off after him. There was a good check at a 5 way intersection and again the visitors were in the lead. Up a pleasant trail for a while and we hit a circle check on a ridge – a visitor calling ‘on-on’ to the right brought Skid Mark back from checking to the left only to find it was a false alarm. Back we went and I spotted an option down into a familiar gully – Yes! I had it and having scouted the area before it was straight down the trail to the On-In.

I ran straight through a couple of circle checks as I knew to the left was just a steep impenetrable hill and to the right was the trail we’d run out on.  Apparently I (and the other FRBs) missed a false trail to the left which made many of the walkers do some checking for a change and left them to arrive sometime after the FRBs. Despite the FD checks it was a good run in an area that is full of great running trails. Good work emergency hares!

31st July – CH4 Run – Belly Dancer

It has been suggested that Belly Dancer hares runs with the sole intention of causing serious damage to the hashers. Today he organised the weather to make a tough run impossible! We set up off the steps to Doi Kham with some ambiguous instructions to look for paper on the right – we saw paper on the right and went straight past it all the way up the stairs to the temple.  Remembering that hasher’s aren’t the cleverest bunch of people, we climbed off paper just discussing that the hare had been ‘kee nieow’ with the paper.

Dick the Boy Wonder was determined that the trail would begin when we got to the top and for some daft reason we believed him and followed Chuck Wao to a padlocked gate at the top. Finally we stopped listening to Dick the Boy, and headed back down to where we’d seen the paper – which happened to lead off into absolutely nowhere – no trail, just paper (occasionally) hanging off on the edge of a mountain. With the added rain the mountainside became treacherous and there was no shortage of candidates for the crash – I was covered in mud when I finally made it back.

We eventually got to a circle check – there were no trails leading off it, just a pile of paper in the middle of a jungle. Given that HRA couldn’t hear Chuck Wao over the rain when he was stood next to him, we decided to stick together choosing the route that headed towards a road we could see through the trees. That was a wrong call as we plummeted off the mountain and didn’t find paper. HRA, Little Wet One and I clambered back up the hill and found paper again that lead straight back down the hill (parallel to where we’d just descended) and to where Chuck Wao was stood waiting for us.

Another circle check and a dilemma – we gave it a bit of a look around, and gave up as the roads had already turned into rivers. The field was decimated down to 4 of us, and the rain was relentless – and as fortunately we knew where we were, we headed back – I’ve faced near death experiences enough on BD’s runs before. Fortunately everyone survived and also fortunately the circle was a good one. Hollow Legs had more phone calls during the circle than I’ve had in the past month and was justifiably punished for each of them.  Truth be told I enjoyed scrambling around, risking my life on the edge of the hill, so good job Belly Dancer – the rain just thwarted your evil plans. The circle made up for it, and you have a run in the bag for next time – although not sure I want to endure it again!

Cool Balls teamed up with the S&M girl for today’s adventure. After confusing directions the A was surprisingly easy to find – just 100m away from the Maerim highway. This was my first Cool Balls run – and a first for S&M too, so I was curious what the pair would come up with.  We kicked off on the tarmac and then a big highway under construction – the circle there took far too long to find and Get’s Wet and I were way back.

As we hit the ‘hills’ we had to scramble up a little escarpment to find the trails – Golden Showers had to scramble up twice after an impressive tumble back down. The trails in the hills seemed to go around in circles with no clear direction and a large part of the pack took advantage of this finding a good short cut as we suddenly ran into most of the usual suspects – Hollow Legs, Pamela, Dick the Wonderless, Superman – and then the road suddenly appeared in front of us – and this was where the hares had their main surprise.

The Aqueduct! (Not a viaduct as Superman thought, but an Aqueduct). It seemed to go on for ever with a narrow path and a small rail to balance on to avoid the drop to the river and rice fields. Dickless Wonder was following Sups and needed to duck out the way each time the FRBs passed with Chuck Wao, HRA and Son of A Bitch leading the charge. Down below Horny Monkey and I spotted Belly Dancer on trail and that gave us good clues about what was to come after the aqueduct. Back onto tarmac and back to the beers. A tough run, but a good one!
